Default Definitely not a way to reduce light pollution

More likely, the first astronomer to receive a Darwin award.

Not quite; two German candidates, trying to get a better look at the
ultimate light polluter, and a clueless Colombian panicked over an
event on the other side of the ocean, grabbed the award 2 days before
Scott Millett did:

Here is Mr. Millett's story:

My old skipper
had a saying, "The stupid shall be punished."

"...But stupidity is the only universal capital crime; the sentence
is death, there is no appeal, and execution is carried out
automatically and without pity."
--Robert A. Heinlein

Unfortunately for the Colombian man's wife, being married to a stupid
person may carry the same penalty.

Clear skies!
