It could have been a form of ET laser targeting, so that their WMD which is intended to vaporize a dysfunctional and otherwise useless planet that's simply too toxic and too wasted, will hit its intended target.

After all, they would not want to waste another good weapon if they were worth trillions of dollars each. Of course any halfwit ET could just as easily nudge Sedna into impacting us, although at 90 AU and only 1+ km/s taking thousands of years might not have been a quick enough solution as to eradicating us before we can start depleting and contaminating other planets.
