Default Better choice of Spirit landing zone

I'd like to know why NASA avoided to take into consideration the
landing of at least one of its rover in one of the "strange" regions
of Mars.

Because NASA's current philosophy is to search for evidence of life, and
when you've only got two rovers with the underwhelming range of a kilometer
or two to explore an entire planet the size of Mars, it makes a lot more
sense to look for life where you think you're likely to find it, rather
than being distracted by every bizarre anomaly that presents itself.
