Actually, this is hardly new news is it? The debate on what to do with it
after its got terminal knackered-ness has been going on for some time.
I'd certainly not want to see an uncontrolled re entry when its done. The
real legacy of the station, in my view has been learning what works and what
does not in space and how to make things up there.
The next stage in the story is how to survive with large amounts of
radiation around and very reliable repairable life support systems that do
not rely on being close to the source of the parts for survival.

Can we do it? Hard to say yet. We could find we are marooned here.
