Listen, I don't care how well the chromacor works,
Obviously not, but those who use them (correctly) *do* care.
it still works in tandem with medium quality optics..SO WHAT if you
remove much of the colour, your still dealing with not even above
average optics.
Do you know what you are talking about? First of all, the optics in the
Syntas are surprisingly good. Sure, QC is poor and some lemons slip
through; they also accidentally make some superb "standard" achromats.
As long as one is not dealing with defects like zones and roughness, in
refractors one is concerned mainly with chromatic aberration and the
Seidel errors, of which spherical aberration is the most obtrusive in
many (but by no means all) Synta achromats. The only way to correct CA
is to add more refractive elements, whether this is at the "big end"
(apochromats) or the small end (e.g. chromacor). Chromacor is also
available in varieties that correct SA, so it can be matched to
particular objectives. The consequence is that the result is very much
"above average optics".
TMB's and that class still have superior quality optics.
Not in dispute. They also (and rightly so) have prices to match. You get
what you pay for and, whilst I am no fan of VD's newsgroup antics, that
does not negate the fact that Chromacor is an excellent product that is
very good value for money.
Best,
Stephen
