'We' have our 25% lunatic fringe just like you.

And only by having the two lunatic opposite extremes
hash it out can a sane middle be found. McCain
lost so badly to Obama because he thought by
straddling the fence he could attract both sides
to vote for him. But moderate is uninspiring and
more likely to just make enemies with both sides.

Instead of putting forth a candidate that's just
an average of the two so to speak, they should
find someone that represents the fringe of both
sides at once. A Bush on foreign policy that's
a Kennedy on social issues so to speak. Instead
of an average of the two, combine both extremes
into one. With the idea that the range generated
allows every voter to find something they like.

Uncertainty is a natural attractor, which helped
Obama win the White House. The less something
defines itself, the more the observer can see
what they want.

Aside from being undefined, there are only two other ways
of creating that uncertainty. By an average of the two, or by
combining the extremes of each side. But they should do that
with a single candidate, not just by using the VP as in
Obama/Biden, McCain/Palin.
