I think you and the article are splitting hairs here. Even the word
"terrapin" means little turtle. Clearly one definition of "turtle"
includes turtles, tortoises and terrapins. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/turtle

And why would a terrapin not be an aquapin, at least some times?
Terrapin seems for fitting for a tortoise.
