Not at all useless; you get the female science fiction fan over to your
back yard, take out the telescope, and start showing her the locations of
all of the planets from her favorite stories. Then you slip on your
pointed ears, arch your eyebrows, point the telescope at 40 Eridani A, and
it's Pon Farr time.
How can information that will get you laid be "useless"? ;-)

I didn't say get her drunk or anything...though that might help*, as
then you could aim the telescope at any star and claim it's any star you
want.
You could say: "...and next, let's look at Uranus."

* Based on the female sci-fi fans I've run into, this is probably
unnecessary, as most seem pretty dizzy in a completly sober state.
In fact, it may be counter-productive...unless you want to spend three
tearful hours discussing how she would have made a great Dragonrider on
Pern. ;-)
