Not at all useless; you get the female science fiction fan over to your
back yard, take out the telescope, and start showing her the locations
of all of the planets from her favorite stories. Then you slip on your
pointed ears, arch your eyebrows, point the telescope at 40 Eridani A,
and it's Pon Farr time.
How can information that will get you laid be "useless"? ;-)
