LONG BEACH - A maintenance worker was critically injured when he was
crushed by an elevator while working on the Sea Launch satellite
platform, officials said.

The 37-year-old worker was repairing and cleaning the platform in the
Long Beach Harbor when the accident occurred Wednesday afternoon,
Firefighter Paul Rodriguez said.

The man, whom authorities did not identify, was hanging by a harness
about 40 feet above the deck of the Sea Launch ship, working on the
side of the 100-foot-plus launch platform where an exterior elevator
carries employees to the top of the launch pad, Rodriguez said.

Elevator operators couldn't see the maintenance man when they started
up, he said.

"By the time they realized what happened, they heard him screaming
and they realized he was pinned," Rodriguez said.

The worker was taken to a local hospital where he was in extremely
critical condition, he said.

Long Beach-based Sea Launch is an international consortium that fires
satellites into orbit from its seagoing platform. The venture includes
Boeing Commercial Space Co. of Seattle; Aker ASA of Oslo, Norway;
RSC-Energia of Moscow; and SDO Yuzhnoye-PO Yuzhmash of Dnepropetrovsk,
Ukraine.
