NASA Report: Shuttle Launch Debris Common
Large Metallic Pieces Have Showered Spacecraft Often

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- A new internal report shows deadly debris has
showered space shuttles more often than NASA has previously admitted.
The report -- obtained exclusively by NewsChannel 2 -- shows large
metallic pieces have come off on 40 percent of launches since 1994,
including the recent Columbia launch. Columbia exploded while
returning from space on Feb 1., and some have speculated that launch
debris -- in Columbia's case, foam insulation -- is the cause. The new
report introduces the theory that metal debris also could have been
the cause.
