Here's an online article from the NYT titled "Crew of Columbia Survived
a Minute After Last Signal". There will no doubt be more articles about
this in the near future. Apologies if you've already seen any.

Excerpt:

"The final sequence of events is that at 8:59:28 a.m., Col. Rick D.
Husband, the flight commander, was cut off as he spoke to mission
control, saying "Roger, uh," or perhaps "Roger, buh." From the context
of the conversation, he may have been in the middle of saying "Roger,
both," responding to messages about both left-side main landing gear
tires, which sensors indicated were overheating."

I thought they were tire pressure messages.

Nice to see the holy NY Times catching up to where MSNBC.com was three
months ago, and not bothering to pay any attention to their own
un-originality.

The story was originally assigned to Jayson Blair -- they had to find
someone else to take over the story, and it takes time.

Seriously, an editor probably dropped a copy of the scenario on some cub
reporter's desk on Monday morning, saying "See what you can do with it,
kid!"
