View Full Version : STS107: ET-208 video?

July 15th 03, 11:54 AM
NASA released the ascent film of camera E212 very early. But I never saw
that of camera ET208 wich had a look at the impact area and the underside
of the wing. In this video location of the desintegration of the foam
should be vissible. I only saw stills from before and after the event.
Are somewhere stills of the event or the video itself?

From the CAIB Scenario just released (Page 25 in the PDF or 3-6):

The most useful video analysis was performed using two cameras that are
part of the Eastern Launch Range imaging system. Camera E212 (film),
located on the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, was approximately 17
miles from the orbiter at the time of foam impact and Camera ET208
(video), located in Cocoa Beach, Florida, was 26 miles from the orbiter.
The overall camera geometry relative to the launch pad and ascent
flight path is shown in Figure 3-7. Camera E212 had a better view of
the topside of the launch vehicle, while Camera ET208 had a better
bottom side view. Figure 3-8 depicts the view from each of the camera
systems. A third camera, E208 (film), also recorded the launch but was
blurred and contained no useful data for the investigation. There are
no Launch Commit Criteria (LCC) regarding cameras, or camera views for
ascent, for either onboard or ground.

I think I've got you killfiled for some reason and I'm seeing this as a
response, but it's a reasonable question.

I think that's where I got my real-time clip from. Either that or the CAIB
site... Filename is STS-107.LaunchEngineeringReplay.ET208.avi, which is how
insideksc usually names things.

In real time the debris hit is FAST. It shows up as a pale streak from the
tank, down the chord of the wing and into the SRB plume in a fraction of a
second. No real change on the wing is visible... IMO there's a tiny spot on
the RCC that's a bit LIGHTER after the impact in the area of interest, but
to use a now-notorious turn of phrase, "it's not even worth mentioning."
