I recall reading somewhere that some parts of Columbia are going to be sent to
research centers for the long term, for studies on the affects of re-entry. Let
the scientists take their cracks at the bird's remains I say...if it continues
to teach us something that would be a fitting enough memorial.

Apollo 1 I know has been pretty much been under lock and key since the flash
fire and subsequent disassembly of the spacecraft. Were the remains of
Challenger pretty much buried in that old missile silo soon after the recover
and investigation efforts closed?

I've heard Challenger is encased in cement and buried. That seems
sadder than distributing pieces of Columbia to whomever's interested
in them for testing.

You might say this group chose not to bury the problem.

Not correct. It's in a missile silo at the Cape (that is in fact sealed.)

....with the parts' locations catalogued so they can be individually
retrieved for whatever purpose may require it.
