View Full Version : Rich Anderson, where is he?

There used to be a guy named Rich Anderson, who lived in Toronto, Canada
that posted here. He posted thousands, if not tens of thousands of times
to the group.
He posted as ANDERSON RM
He had a knack for getting people going, but knew a lot about scopes.
I've been away from the group for many years, and did a search back in
Google for his postings since then. He appears to have stopped posting
in 1999, in the late summer or fall.
Does anybody know why?
Does he post under a different name, or just lurk now?
I doubt he could stay away, so ??????
He sort of defined the group back then along with a few others. He got
in a few real heated debates with guys who defended Roland and AP
scopes. I think he hated AP and Televue, which didn't make him any
friends. I got into a bit of it with him at the time as well, he was a
huge part of the history of this group.
Anyway,,,,,just wondering if anybody knows?

He's still here.
He's got a new e-mail address, which is why your Google search didn't pick
him up. I don't recall what his new address is, though. At least he
still uses his real name.
He doesn't post here very often anymore, but he's still the same old
Rich... I wouldn't say he ever defined this group, but he was certainly
much more active once upon a time.

This must be Shawn under another pseudonym. Rich may be cantankerous at
times but he knows a lot about telescopes and posts useful material.
Shawn doesn't have either quality.

I never considered Rich Anderson a troll. Just because one has opinions you
don't agree with that doesn't make them a troll.

Hi:
Right. Shawn _can_ be amusing. But he doesn't often choose to share the
knowledge he has, being too wrapped up with his "trolls." Rich, while he rubbed
quite a few folks the wrong way (to put it mildly ;-)), was/is almost always
worth listening to.

Since you were concerned about Rich Anderson's whereabouts, I thought you
might have missed this, though Rich posted it to SAA today.
Below, we have Rich, the Canadian, trolling about the America's NASA...
*****************
*****************
Did anyone else figure 20 years ago that they might be dead before
NASA returned a sample from Mars???
It's nice that the probe made it down to Mars safely and appears to be
working well, especially after the Japanese and Brit probes failed.
At least
some work will get done, but it's irksome that now we find out no
samples
will be brought back from Mars for at least a decade. NASA's goals
have
really fallen behind the times. Theoretically, had other paths been
followed since the 1950s, we could have had people on Mars in the next
10 years.
But the paths they took have resulted in some pretty discouraging
experience.
For one, these probes don't appear to be much different than the
Viking landers
that made it to Mars over 27 years ago, except they have a rover,
which was
done in the 1990s as well. No way will NASA have an ice borer on
Europa before
2025 either. Instead, we have the costly and increasingly decrepit
Shuttle Program and the horrifically costly ($120b and counting)and
miscalculated ISS sucking NASA dry, keeping them 20 years behind where
they should be at this point in space exploration. Long distance
rocket technology was left to rot
after the hugely successful Apollo program....Now, in panic mode due
to Chinese
proposals for space exploration, NASA and the American government are
scrambling
to re-arrange things. Not a moment too soon.

<splitting hairs> doesn't the "NA" in "NASA" stnd for "North
American". What? There's more to North America than the USA???
</splitting hairs>
Remember the Robotic Arm on the shuttle and ISS.
I am not a lumberjack or a fur trader,
And I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber or own a dogsled,
And I don't know Jimmy, Sally, or Susie from Canada,
Although I am certain they are really, really nice.
I have a Prime Minister, not a President.
I speak English and French, not American.
And I pronounce it "about" ... not "a-boot".
I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.
I believe in peacekeeping not policing;
Diversity not assimilation;
And that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal!
A touque is a hat; a chesterfield is a couch.
And it is pronounced ZED not ZEE; ZED!
Canada is the second largest landmass,
The first nation of hockey, (Don't talk to me about the World Junior
Hockey Championship, where the Canadian Gaolie scored on himself!)
And the best part of North America!

Not too much light pollution up there, eh??? Not too much heat, either...
Have to run those equatorial mounts with dry lube instead of grease,
otherwise they might freeze up solid... Not to mention freezing an
eyeball, now and then, to a short eye relief ortho... YIKES!!!

Depends on where you live. South of USA, the answer still may be USA.
North of USA, it might be part of America, part of England, or part of
France. Kinda' hard to tell sometimes.
Similar kinda' thing happens when you start talking about Mad Cow

Our country (Canada) is universally famous for investing less (in terms of
% of our national income) in all types
of R&D and pure science than any other Western country. It's like
similar to how the U.S. views foreign aid.
But we have some good private companies doing work. The CCDs in the
Mars probes are from Dalsa, a Canadian company based in Waterloo, Ontario.
I think.

I guess there's no accounting for taste. Shawn is far more
entertaining than Rich, but Rich IMHO has always had higher quality
material. Unlike the kooks, though, both of them are true amateur
astronomers, and know their stuff--even when they're talking nonsense.

It was a translation of an idea (small office), not a measurement of a
specific area. Too much precision can make things look weird.
